Food is the number one thing in America’s landfills right now.
Almost half of the United States’ food supply is wasted. At the same time, children and adults in every Westchester community are going hungry. Our own neighbors go nights without meals, while quality food is thrown away.
Food waste is a global issue. Food banks are a part of the solution — the solution for a sustainable future.
Feeding Westchester’s Retail Recovery program diverts millions of pounds of food destined for landfills, and gets it to families across Westchester County in need of nourishment. In 2021, we rescued 1.8 million meals from ending up in a landfill!
Your support — a fundraiser, a monthly donation, a social media post — is so crucial in the fights against hunger and food waste.
Providing nourishing food to the community requires a robust infrastructure and a high degree of coordination.
Feeding Westchester has long-term relationships with over 80 manufacturers, farmers, and retailers who help us safely recover nutritious food to help feed our neighbors.
Our fleet of refrigerated trucks is on the road daily, sourcing the food donated by our dedicated retailers.
These trucks are then brought back to our 30,000 square-foot warehouse, where food is inspected, sorted, and packed by volunteers for distribution to more than 300 partner agencies and programs that help support our neighbors in need.
The food we safely recover doesn’t just change lives — it saves food from becoming waste, diverting millions of pounds from landfills.
